Having worked in the oncology area and had relatives stricken with cancer, I can not think of a more useful tool for someone who needs to fight cancer. This is a very dynamic area of medicine where treatment protocols are made then remade. How do you know if your doctor is up to speed? This book tells you where the leading instutions are and how to access the latest treatments. If nothing else, this book allows you to feel like you are part of the fight.

This has been a very helpful book in my research since my cancer diagnosis. It has also been helpful to answer questions for several friends who have had diagnoses in the last year. It is a good overview for a variety of cancers.

I was first introduced to CHOICES 17 years ago when my sister-in-law was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Using the book as a reference work, we were able to understand the disease she was dealing with, the tests and treatments that she was going through. It bridged the 2000 mile gap that existed between the family. I passed the earlier edition on to other friends who unfortunately had to deal with cancer. It became my bible when my husband was diagnosed as well. During the 4 years that he fought the battle, it continued to be our constant companion. When my husband's illness was declared "terminal" CHOICES remained pertinent with questions about final "choices" The authors address issues in clear layman's language. It also allows the patient to ask more informed questions and feel a better sense of control in the treatment of his or her illness. This book won't make the New York Times Best Sellers list but, it is a wonderful book to have when you need it.

Illich's goal was society not schools. He saw schools as perpetuating the status quo. This, and his other books, promotied living a convivial life. This is, one in harmonious collaboation with other people. Schooling, whether state, free, or home schooling, removes young peole from their families, their community, society and nature. Illich was for living convivially and simply in the "vernacular." That is with friends, community and the actual world that surrounds you and with the natural abilities with which you are endowed.
That is the kind of life promoted today by the book "Creating Learning Communities," Ron Miller, ed.

....and the 'Important People' of the world refuse to listen to you, you *must* be telling the truth.

Illich died this month. Maybe someone will come along and champion some of his many ideas and causes. But some of the things he has been talking about--the structuring of education in this world is ineffective for actual learning, but is designed for the maintaining of class strata, and that the rich gets the best schooling because they pay for it (not saying that they are exceptionally talented or intellectual or anything more than mediocre) has been debated for years and will be debated for years. Subtexted to his arguments is that the rich needs the poor to help define themselves. And any time 'the institution'
gets fired up about improving the conditions for the mass culture, it end up achieving the opposite effect, as the reviewer below noted. To me, this is reminescent of those two dystopia novels we were forced to read in high school, "1984" and "Brave New World" (somewhere there's a great irony in my feeling this way).

Anyway, Illich, even though he was an academician, became a great human rights advocate and champion of the poor and downtrodden all around the world. This great work of his should be read by anyone who believes in truth and freedom.

If you're looking for material that will justify your worst suspicions as to the actual effectiveness of modern schooling while inspiring in you a desire for change, you're on the right track. But be warned. This book is far more than an essay on the failings of our educational system.

Education is merely the author's proving ground for one simple premise: it is the nature of the institution to produce the opposite of itself. This basic paradigm may be applied to any institutionalized need. You'll find yourself analyzing the role of healthcare in well-being, financial services in prosperity, the food industry in nutrition, and so on...

Find this book and buy it.

In the nutrition guide Get a Real Food Life, Whiteson and Rosenfeld tackle the obstacles that dieters and non-dieters alike face on a daily basis, from late night binging to restaurant orders. I was particularly impressed with the balance of advice and nutritional information; one section lists the types and combinations of meals that give us the nutrients we need, how much of a given nutrient/vitamin we need in a day, etc.

In addition, the authors delineate several different types of eating plans, and give an overview of carbohydrate-based eating, protein-based eating, three-square, and grazing style...they know that each of us is unique, and we need to do what feels right for us--not what the latest trends dictate.

They teach us how to keep a food journal, how to set realistic goals, and how to assess our progress. Most importantly, though, there is no end-all, be-all; on the contrary, Whiteson and Rosenfeld take a sensible approach to providing each of us with a unique key to more healthful living.

After reading "Get a Real Food Life" I was inspired to push myself to get rid of the extra weight I had gained form my pregnancy. Janine Whiteson has a motivating outlook on living a healthy life with a diet that anyone can live with!

Finally, a book that will make a true difference, by people who KNOW what they're talking about. It's one thing to look better and another thing entirely to feel better-that's what this book is all about. So far this book has brought me BOTH. I am indebted to these two women and so too will you be.

I have used this book time and time again, and not only for Christmas. The recipes are accurate, easy and great. The color photos really show how the recipes should look and they will! I have made more that a dozen different types of cookies from this book and each one was good if not great. The only problem I have with this book is that the ingredients are written into the directions. This makes it a little more time consuming when you are trying to get your recipes ready before the actual assemble and baking process. A minor set back for a really great book.

I've used this cookie book when making holiday cookies for family and friends for the last several years, and the results have always been a huge hit. Too often Christmas cookies look great but taste terrible - not something to worry about with this book. I particularly recommend the Cranberry-Cherry Pinwheels. They are delicious and surprisingly easy to prepare. However, be forwarned that most of the recipes in this book are also found in the new Joy of Cooking. Joy is great and much more comprehensive. I'd recommend taking a look at it before buying this book.

As the designated Christmas cookie baker in my family, I was given this book about three years ago. It's a wonderful resource for new ideas and rediscovering old favorites. I heartily recommend the snickerdoodles and the orange ginger wafers.

THE MORE I READ OF THIS BOOK, THE HARDER IT BECAME TO PUT IT DOWN. I FELT A PART OF THE WRITER'S EXPERIENCES, FRUSTRATIONS AND LONGINGS. READING A BOOK LIKE THIS PUTS ME INTO THE LIVES BEING DESCRIBED AND EXPOSES ME TO THE HEARTBREAK THEREIN. VERY TOUCHING AND ONE THAT I WILL READ AGAIN. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE SUFFERINGS OF MARION AND AMANDA AND THEIR FAMILIES.

This simple farmer who went to war wrote letters home to his wife and child describing what his daily routines were in the army, including the homesickness and heartaches. The daily truths he describes make it hard to idealize and glorify any war.

If you want to know what it was like to be a soldier in the Civil War, read this book. It gives incredible insight into the day to day hardships that a soldier faced. It is an emotional journey that presents the pride of fighting for a cause and the heartaches of leaving ones family.

How I only wish life could still be. Pelle cuts his wool from his sheep, and through several barters of chores, has a suit made for him. Innocent. I believe this the best Beskow book. Ages2-6.

I bought this for my sons 6th birthday and he has read it every day since then-that is 1 1/2 months ago. Great reading-no villains-just one hero-Pelle

Hello. I just got done reading this book. It is terrific. I found it at a flea market last weekend. It was published in 1934. Are there many of these old books left? The book I have is in great condition!

I highly recommend this book for anyone. There is a LOT of amazing information in Soul Wisdom Vol. 1, yet it reads very easily. I found it very difficult to put down until I was finished. I am now very eager to read more, hope to see Volume 2 soon!

Ms. Webb-De Sisto writes from the heart, in a comfortable-to-read fashion. The ideas, information and experiences relayed in this book are truly remarkable. All good stuff that makes one stop and think about life and existance. This lady is a GOLD MINE of talent and information which can help all of us understand who we really are and what we are doing here.

The insightful style of writing coupled with the remarkable information, stories and experiences, come together to form a fantastic read that will make you take a higher perspective when dealing with everyday situations. I cannot speak highly enough about Soul Wisdom Vol. 1... I recommend it to anyone who is interested in "the greater picture" of life and existance. :-)

George Behe performs a first-rate analysis of some of the most controversial aspects of the sinking of the Titanic, gathering together pieces of evidence which indicate that important aspects of the sinking were covered up by the White Star Line after the sinking. Make no mistake about it -- this is not some sensationalist diatribe, but a well-researched, carefully documented study. It's a small book, but an important contribution to the subject.

Behe gives us a profound look at one of the greatest trragedies of the 20th century. Its well worth the price and well worth the time to read

George Behe has written the best Titanic book. He has done thorough research in his subject and has come up with some very concrete conclusions about that tragic night.

George has taken the results both Inquiries and some additional investigation and come to a very startling conclusion. Was the White Star Line negligent? Was "someone" trying to cover up certain facts pertaining to the navigation of the ship? These and many more questions are answered here in this book.

As the title suggests, Titanic was an accident just waiting to happen. I highly recommend this very important book.

Like The Heritage of Hastur, Sharra's Exile is told in chapters that alternate between the first-person narrative of Lew Alton, and the third-person focus on other characters (Diotima Ridenow and Regis Hastur, in particular). It takes up where the previous book left off, where struggles between birth family and chosen family are concerned. On a larger scale, there is also the battle between those who want to preserve the traditional culture of Darkover "by any means necessary" (including use of the Sharra Matrix, which is definitely against the Compact), and those who wish to become part of the Terran Empire.

The central characters become caught up in this struggle, while also dealing with the conflicting loyalties in their personal lives. Regis Hastur has to face his grandfather's disapproval of his lover Danilo, Lew Alton is haunted by the last words of his dead father, and Diotima Ridenow has to sort through her feelings for Lew when their marriage ends in disaster following the premature birth of their horribly deformed son.

Those who were touched by the madness of the Sharra Circle are drawn back to it, and the attempts to harness Sharra's power could easily spell disaster for Darkover.

I am truly sorry but my review, (by Valai) the one that you will come across shortly, is not supposed to be on Sharra's Exile but it's supposed to be a review on Exile's Song, the book following this one. I don't know how it happened but I apologize. This book was a great book though.

Marguerida Alton was born on Darkover but left when she was a small child. She returns with her music mentor and finds that haunted memories are buried within her mind and keep tormenting her everywhere she goes. It was a terrible loss when her mentor died right after they got to Darkover but now the real adventure begins.

Marguerida takes her mentor's death deeply. He was the only "real" father she ever knew. Loving, caring and filled with tenderess was what she had always craved and when she met him and his wife they gave her that.

Life on Darkover gets more mysterious when people keep treating her like royalty. They distantly refer to her dark red hair. Other people come up to her and keep telling her tidbits about the comyn and something about Gifts. Marguerida has no idea what they are talking about but has this nagging feeling that there is something she should have remembered. She travels with Rafaela to continue her musical work that she and her now dead mentor would have completed together. On the way she doesn't feel good and is sicker than she should have ever been, but doesn't know it because a lot of the time she's unconcious. Marguerida Alton is then transported to a castle where she finds friendship and the budding of new love ...

The cause of being sick is that her gift is inserting itself into her. Everyone tells her it's a gift ... why can't she believe that? To her it's a curse. The worst curse ...

Secrets are locked behind hidden walls in her mind ... no one can get to them except for herself and to do that she has to face something she fears the most ...
